As it is known today, CRA Architects began when Joseph N. Clemons established his practice in 1960 in a detached two-room cottage, “the old kitchen” of what is now known as “The Columns” in Tallahassee. In his first few years, close to 90 percent of his work was for ecclesiastical clients. In addition to his intelligence and integrity, Mr. Clemons was known by all for his quick and clever wit. He had an uncanny way of making us all laugh when facing the most challenging projects. Always with a calm and common sense approach, The Honorable State of Florida House Representative Marjorie Turnbull is quoted as saying “I do not recall a problem that he found insurmountable. When he was in the room anything was possible. When he was in the room everyone else relaxed.” Over the next 20 years the practice continued to grow and Mr. Clemons demonstrated an uncanny ability in assessing talent when he hired Mr. William D. Rutherford, who went on to show an affinity for the business and for Joe. The cadre was complete and, in 1979, they combined their names to make Clemons, Rutherford & Associates, Inc. (CRA). The partners expanded the firm’s areas of expertise from primarily ecclesiastical and healthcare to also include, higher education and corrections with projects for clients like Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, Tallahassee Community College and the Florida Department of Corrections. CRA began to diversify geographically in the late 1980’s with a portfolio of successful projects. We now have a roster of the most talented architectural thinkers, designers and relationship builders anywhere and have expanded our presence and our reach to include projects all over the United States.
